braking distance-
distance car travels between brakes applied and when the car stops

stopping distance-

Mini poster assignment

Make a mini poster on one (or all!) of Newton's Laws.

You will be graded on the following:

  • creativity
  • neatness
  • color
  • the wording of the Law
  • examples of the law being applied
  • any key vocabulary words from act. 80 reading

QUIZ TOMORROW

STUDENTS:
First of all, everyone did a great job today on learning about Newton's 3 laws of motion and practicing DTR and FMA formulas for tomorrow's quiz. Everyone also did a nice job on the pre-assessment yesterday. We are going to be great with reading science texts by June.

I'm attaching today's activity 80 scavenger hunt AND the entire reading article from the pre-assessment so you can study for your quiz.

Second of all, we've got a quiz tomorrow. Make SURE You know:

  • Vocabulary from this unit (GLOSSARY HERE)
  • Distance-time-rate equations -- -- --  D=TR, R=D/T, T=D/R
  • Force-mass-acceleration equations -- -- -- F=MA, M=F/A, A=F/A

We're about halfway through the force and motion unit and we need to make sure we've got this down.

PARENTS: We have a Thanksgiving Food Drive going at TOR and all donations would be appreciated. Students will be given extra credit in science class for any donations brought in.

Flash Cards

Groups 003 and 004:

You completed flash cards today. All the vocab words can all be found on THE GLOSSARY. The front of the card should have the vocabulary word. The back of the card should have:
          • Definition
          • Example
          • The Units (if available)
          • The Formula to solve (if available)
Here is an example.

Glossary

There will be a vocab quiz coming up at the end of the week. make SURE your glossaries are complete with definitions and examples to help you. This class has a lot of new words and we need to make sure we aren't being left behind. CLICK HERE for a current list of everything you should have in your glossary section of your binders.

Force, Mass, and Acceleration

Today we did activity 78 and found the relationship between force, mass, and acceleration. We made a double line graph and answered analysis questions 1-6 on the hand out.

*Remember-
the more mass an object has, the less it will accelerate if force is constant
the less mass an object has, the more it will accelerate if force is constant.

the more force you apply to an object, the more it will accelerate if mass is constant.
the less force you apply to an object, the less it will accelerate if mass is constant.

the more mass an object has, the more force it will take to accelerate it.
the less mass an object has, the less force it will take to accelerate it.

Weekend

First of all, I hope everyone has a great weekend!
We started some more equations in class that are VERY important moving forward.  The worksheet from class today is available HERE.Make sure you understand how to use D=RT and F=MA and remember the units for everything:
  • Distance - meters (m)
  • Rate - meters per second (m/s)
  • Time - seconds (s)
  • Force - Newtons (N)
  • Mass - kilograms (kg)
  • Acceleration - meters per second squared (m/s2)

Here are some of the challenge questions you saw in class

Update & Worksheets

Okay Folks,

We've covered a lot this week! We've introduced the concept of Force and how both speed and/or mass can impact force in a collision (crash!). Tomorrow we will review these concepts and add a brand new equation for everyone - woohoo for math!

In the meantime, I'm attaching the student worksheets we've been working on this week so everyone can make sure they have everything. If you can't open the .pdf file e-mail me for a .doc version.

At this point in the quarter everyone should be checking in with me and making sure they have all of their assignments handed in.

Notebook Check and QUIZ

On Friday we will be having a notebook quiz (4) and a force and motion quiz.

The notebook quiz will cover material from the beginning of school until now.

The force and motion quiz will be on DTR practice questions.
Study your homework from the past two nights.

Acitivity 74: Distance Time and Rate

BIG stuff this week. The D=TR stuff is going to be happening a LOT in this unit so you NEED to make sure you know it. See me if you don't. Here are some of the worksheets from this week:

Cover Page - Force & Motion

Well people, we are finished with our first unit since we took the Energy test today. One down, six more to go! In order to split up our notebooks into easy sections, We should have a cover page for the next unit we will start which is Force & Motion. Use some of the words below to create a beautiful cover page. Remember, the best ones get featured on this website.
  • Acceleration
  • Balanced Force
  • Unbalanced Force
  • Center of Mass
  • Distance
  • Rate
  • Time
  • Friction
  • Inertia
  • Force
  • Speed
  • Isaac Newton
  • Newton's Laws
  • Gravity
